![]() Initially the Assamese literature was the oral literature, can be traced in the lokageets or folk songs.The year 1979 was observed as the ‘ Official Language Year’ to fully implementation of the Act.Assamese became the official language of Assam under the provisions of the Official Language Act, 1960.English, Hindi, Bengali, Bodo, Tiwa, Karbi, Mising, Rabha, Deuri Nepali and other languages are being used in Assam.They learnt Assamese for their benefit and published Assamese grammar, anglo– assamese dictionary and Assamese journal Orunudoi (published in 1846).The British took over Assam in 1826 and ten years later in 1836 the American Baptist Missionaries arrived in Sivasagar with religious motives. ![]()
